About MBC
Marc Brew Company (MBC) is a disabled and queer led, inclusive contemporary dance company. We collaborate with diverse artists to create powerful performances and inspire participation.
MARC BREW COMPANY is currently a Charity organisation (Charity number: SC055134), based in Scotland. It is fairly unique in the UK, being an inclusive professional contemporary dance company, led by a disabled, queer Artistic Director and Choreographer, Marc Brew. The Company exists to create, develop, encourage, produce, manage, market and promote arts and culture on an international platform.
Founded in 2008, Marc Brew Company fuses a fierce physicality with tender expression to explore an emotional narrative in dance. Grounded in contemporary dance theatre, the work draws on the unique physicality of each performer. The work, created in collaboration with disabled and non-disabled artists, is honest, unsentimental and recognisably human.
MBC is governed by a Board of Trustees who, along with the Artistic Director and Executive Producer, agree on the policies and priorities of MBC. The executive team action policies and strategic initiatives and are supported by the Board of Trustees. The Board meets quarterly via zoom.
We exist:
- To provide public benefit in Scotland, advance engagement, promote equality and diversity and to advance the arts, heritage and culture
- To be a vehicle for Marc’s artistic practice, whilst creating opportunities for others
- In response to the limited opportunities for disabled artists or disabled artistic leaders
- To share the way MBC likes to make work – inclusive, collaborative and with care
- To continually be challenged to take risks and make high quality ambitious work
Since its inception, the company has blazed a trail of high-quality work, bringing together exceptional artists with and without disabilities to create powerful and engaging performances for audiences of all ages, reaching over 30,000 people across the world.
We have created our own rock band, built a sandy island, flown our performers and created unique dance films. We collaborate with top artists and technicians to make this possible, attracting commissioners to support our vision, including National Theatre of Scotland and Tramway.
Our current show, Boys Don’t Dance has been commissioned by Imaginate, in partnership with Aberdeen Performing Arts and will be touring May-June 2026 to children’s festivals and around Scotland.
Our recent show an Accident/ a Life – a co-creation with Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui’s Company Eastman – has been presented at: Holland Dance Festival; Step Dance Festival, Switzerland; Norfolk & Norwich Festival; CODA Festival, Norway; Sweden, Tanz Festival Rhein-Main, and No Limits Festival, Germany; Sadler’s Wells with interest from around the world. Marc’s extensive experience as a dancer and choreographer with a disability, working with disabled and non-disabled dancers means that he challenges performers expectations of their own limitations. In turn, this challenges and inspires the company, our audiences and the Engagement participants.
Participation and sector development is crucial to us. Through our projects, we aim to include opportunities for dance artists and young people wanting to gain experience in all aspects of performing arts. We have provided paid internships for students from Queen Margaret University, Edinburgh University and Dundee College and mentorship and performance opportunities for young musicians and dancers across Scotland.
The company has been in demand internationally, touring to five continents. It collaborates with top quality artists such as Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui, Dame Evelyn Glennie, Bora Kim, Phil Sheppard, Rachel Gadsden and Scott Patterson and has been regularly selected to create work for and perform at the Unlimited Festival, as well as for Cultural Olympiads -London 2012, Rio 2016, and for UK/Korea 2017/18 in association with the Pyeongchang 2018 Winter Olympics and Paralympics Cultural Olympiad program. The company has also presented work at British Dance Edition 2014 and the Festival of 2014 Commonwealth Games.
