The Glasgow School of Art (GSA) is seeking to appoint additional Independent Governors to join its Board and help shape the future of one of the world’s leading art and design institutions.
As a Higher Education Institution, registered charity and internationally recognised centre for creative education and research, GSA is looking for individuals who can contribute their expertise, insight and independent perspective to support the organisation’s strategic ambitions and governance.

About the Role
Independent Governors play a vital role in supporting the governance of The Glasgow School of Art.
Working alongside fellow Board members, the Director and Principal, and the Senior Leadership Team, Governors provide constructive challenge, independent advice and strategic oversight to help ensure the successful delivery of GSA’s mission and long-term ambitions.
The Board of Governors is responsible for approving the institution’s mission and strategic vision, overseeing governance arrangements and ensuring effective stewardship of the organisation’s finances, resources and reputation.
Skills and Experience Sought
The Glasgow School of Art is particularly keen to hear from candidates with expertise in one or more of the following areas:
- Arts and creative cultures
- Legal knowledge and understanding
- Accounting and finance
- Strategy, innovation and commercial awareness
- Digital futures
Applications are also welcomed from individuals with experience in areas such as:
- Business and entrepreneurship
- Human resources and people strategy
- Higher education
- Risk management
- Public relations and communications
- Information technology and digital strategy
- Heritage management
- Community and public engagement
- Public sector or third-sector leadership
Who We’re Looking For
The Board is seeking individuals who:
- Share GSA’s commitment to creativity, education and innovation
- Can contribute strategically and collaboratively at Board level
- Demonstrate sound judgement and integrity
- Are willing to act as ambassadors for the institution
- Have an interest in supporting the future of creative education
- Can contribute constructively to discussions and decision-making
Applications are particularly encouraged from individuals from groups currently underrepresented on the Board, as well as from GSA alumni and members of local communities.
Time Commitment
Governors can expect to attend:
- Four Board meetings each year
- An annual strategic away day
- Graduation ceremonies and Degree Shows
- The Annual Stakeholder Meeting
Governors may also be invited to serve on one of the Board’s committees, which typically meet three times per year via video conference.
Board members are encouraged to engage with the wider life of the institution through lectures, exhibitions and other events throughout the year.
Term of Appointment
Independent Governors are normally appointed for an initial term of three years.
Subject to satisfactory performance, Governors may be reappointed and can serve a maximum of three terms.
Remuneration
This is a voluntary position.
Independent Governors are not remunerated; however, reasonable expenses, including travel costs, will be reimbursed. Financial assistance may also be considered where attendance at meetings would otherwise present difficulties.
